John Graham

John Graham’s earlier practice was based primarily in drawing and printmaking. These formally reduced works combine a sense of graphic conviction with qualities of poise and openness. He continues to make prints, especially in response to specific invitations and contexts. In 2006 he completed a research Masters in Fine Art Media and began to make work in video.

His installations have addressed the experience of place and event and the informal choreographies they compose. Projections/Plans/Elevations (Location A) (2006) was a site-specific video projection that conflated the sites of production and presentation. An interest in film and the history of cinema informs Returning the DVD (2006), where a journey to the DVD store becomes a meditation on film and how its formal devices become implicated in everyday life. The sound and video installation, Opening Sequence … (2008) was made specifically for the Green on Red Gallery with real and staged events being filmed and replayed within the gallery space. Edited footage combined with spoken commentaries from a variety of sources produced an ambiguous, multi-faceted narrative, dealing with the complexities of making and viewing art.

A current project, List, began with a sculpture containing a list of names. It has evolved to become a host structure for a series of engagements with those listed and a framework for an artistic strategy that attempts to reconsider the emphasis on the subjective centre (the individual artist) in art making. All the elements of List, including its conception, actions, and materials, are incorporated into a larger compositional scheme. The website, www.johngraham.ie, forms part of this process.
